Green card photo requirements
- DV lottery: square JPEG, 600 × 600 pixels, 240 KB or smaller, 24-bit color.
- Head 50–69% of the image height (300–414 px); eyes 56–69% up from the bottom.
- Plain white or off-white background, facing the camera.

- No glasses, neutral expression, both eyes open.
Checked against official guidance in September 2026. Rules change, so confirm with the U.S. Department of State – DV Program photo requirements before you apply.
How to take a photo that gets accepted
- Stand about 1 m (3–4 ft) in front of a plain white or light wall, facing a window for soft, even light.
- Ask someone to take the photo at eye level from about 1.2 m (4 ft), or use a timer. Keep your shoulders in the frame.
- Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open.
- Remove glasses, hats and headphones. Religious head coverings are usually allowed if your whole face is visible.
- Upload the photo, check the green head guides and the checklist, then download or print.
Frequently asked questions
What are the DV lottery photo requirements?
A square 600 × 600 pixel color JPEG, up to 240 KB, with the head 50–69% of the image height on a plain white or off-white background.
Can I use the same photo as last year?
No. The State Department asks for a recent photo, and a reused photo can disqualify your entry.
Do I need a photo for each family member?
Yes. Your spouse and each eligible child need their own photo in the entry.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Face detection, cropping and background removal run inside your browser. Your photo never leaves your device and we never see it.
